Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) is the main airport serving Hangzhou, a large city in the Yangtze River Delta region and the capital of Zhejiang Province, China. The former Terminal 1 is considered "The Wave" of Hangzhou by the public for its recognisable undulating roof inspired by the famous scenic spots of West Lake. Faced with the expansion of over double the size, the design suggested to dramatically preserve the memorable roof shape, indicating the passengers of the original Terminal 1. The conflict of dramaturgy leads at the intersection of the old and new building, it shows an indistinct relationship of the corrugated elements: the old corrugated beams are still on the old column; the new corrugated components hang on the new anarchic roof in a force. The new roof now shows as a background in the scene. At the junction, the former columns and beams have been kept but separate. There is also a void at the junction point that allows the arriving people on the ground floor to feel the tension at the same time.
